So I just finished up my game against Gordon P (Raiders). That's not what my review will focus on. That was lopsided and went down as advertised. Dewser was at my apartment to watch the drubbing and I noticed King Koal signed on so Dewser logged on and I was able to witness his game as well....wow.
This year, competition seems to be balanced throughout the USSML and parity has been on display, especially in the last couple of weeks. Bob Selah and the Fins have stepped it up. Ares (Pats) has improved to 8-6. Similyago (Cards) has issued some upsets as well. In this game, your spoiler team was King Koal (GB). Koal beat Duke and the Giants just a couple of weeks earlier and put a serious damper in their playoff chances. Entering this game, Dewser knew a win would tie him with Gord (Raiders) a top the AFC West. Did he take GB lightly? I don't think so. I think no one realizes how could each division seems to be top to bottom. So here is your recap...
King Koal drove down the field pretty successfully on his opening drive. He showcased a good mix of run and pass. The entire game he frustrated Dewser committing to the run and putting himself in short 3rd down situations. Koal was a very impressive 5-6 converting on 3rd downs. This methodical offensive style not only led to points but led to a commanding advantage in time of possession. About 22 mins for Koal and 13 and change for Dewser. Kohl was able to find receivers down the field as well when he needed to and really had Dewser rattled on the defensive side.
Dewser was perhaps a little over zealous in his first possession and immediately found AJ Hawk who returned the interception for a touchdown to put GB on top for an early and surprising 14-0 lead.
Dewser was able to break one of his patented long runs with Charles with just about 30 seconds left in the half for 75 yds but was tackled inches shy of the goal line. He attempted a quick fade to Julio Jones on 1st but the pass was broken up by Charles Woodson. The next play, Charles was stuffed on a run up the middle. Dewser wound up finally punching it in with Matt Cassell on a sneak to avoid a let down and decrease his deficit to 14-7 knowing he'd receive Ball at half.
To add in one more wrinkle, Dewser was able to get the ball back again with little time remaining in the half but was forced to punt quickly deep in his own territory. GB sent the house and blocked the punt where Cassel fell on the ball in the end zone for a safety. 16-7 GB at half.
Dewser built on his offensive momentum to start the third hitting McCluster on an 80 yard reception where McCluster did a lot of the leg work. Again however, King Koal was able to eat up 6 minutes of time before finding Jermichael Finley for six. Dewser would rally right back with a fairly quick drive in the 4th, utilizing no huddle to score quickly and draw within 2. Charles punched in a 1 yd TD to bring the score to 23-21 GB.
Here's where it got crazy. Dewser gets the ball pack and is driving effectively...a conventional 2 minute drill. He has the game all but sealed, breaking inside the 40 with 1 minute left. He's methodically running the ball and using up the clock to set up the game winning fg. At this point, I'm looking at my phone, on the computer, etc. The game was over, right?
Dewser calls a timeout with 14 seconds left and I looked up and asked why he called a timeout so early. He had just called a run play and I asked what he was doing? He said he wanted to set up in between the hash marks. I said isn't that kid of risky and he realized he didn't have any timeouts left. Has I said nothing, the clock would have run out following that play. Dewser, realizing he got away with one rather than taking the delay of game decided he could just run the ball once to use up the time and spike the ball. He did so and got the spike off with just two seconds left....plot twist, it was 4th down. Turnover on downs. Dewser was in utter disbelief. Would have been the worst coaching move of the year. Assuming a loss, we were both discussing what just happened and not paying attention. We realized GB had taken two straight delay of game penalties and was pushed back to the 2 yard line.
We later found out Koals kid had woken up and he had been somewhat distracted. When he came back, rather than kneeling the ball, much to Dewsers surprise he came out in a run formation. Dewser quick audibled to a blitz and sent the house. Two KC LBs broke up the middle and took Starks down in the end zone for a safety to tie the game as regulation ended!
Believe it or not, we're onto overtime. Dewser got the ball and drove to midfield but was forced to punt after failing to complete on 3rd down on a pass that was nearly picked. King Koal would have his chance at a huge upset. However just a couple of plays in, KC safety Chris Prosinski intercepted Rodgers and took the ball down to the one yard line. Charles punched it in and that's all she wrote. Had to be one of the craziest games this season!
